What do acne care, sunscreen, climate change, and Lake Kasumigaura have in common?
Join us on July 31 for the first event in the new TUAN Talk Series, hosted by the Tsukuba Universal Alumni Network (TUAN), and discover how these seemingly different topics are connected through water and the environment.
At this special opening event, two Malaysian students will share how their personal interests and experiences have inspired them to explore global environmental challenges. Everyone is welcome!

Speakers and Topics

Both speakers are currently enrolled in the Joint Master’s Degree Programme between the University of Tsukuba and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).

🌊 Pei : Climate Change and the Future of Lake Kasumigaura
How is climate change affecting the water quality of Lake Kasumigaura?
Pei will introduce her research on climate-related changes in the lake’s thermal structure and water quality, and what these changes could mean for the lake’s future. She will also share her hope of bringing the knowledge and experience she gains in Japan back to Malaysia to apply to environmental challenges there.

🧴 Ethan : From Acne-Prone to “Baby-Soft” Skin—The Unexpected Link Between Skincare, Sunscreen, and Water
Can skincare products that protect our skin also affect the environment?
Ethan will share his personal interest in skincare, including ingredient known as tretinoin and his own journey towards healthier skin. He will then introduce his current research into how certain sunscreen ingredients may impact aquatic ecosystem, what this could mean for life on Earth in the future, and how these effects might be reduced.
