My home university does not have Student Exchange Agreement with University of Tsukuba. Can I apply for the Student Exchange Program?
私の在籍大学は筑波大学と協定がありません。出願できますか？

We accept applications from university students outside of our partner universities who meet certain conditions. Please check the “Tuition Fees and Waivers” in Application Guide and contact us.
非協定校の学生も一定の要件を満たした場合、出願を受け付けています。まずは出願要項を確認のうえ、お問い合わせください。

Is there a minimum English proficiency requirement for exchange students? Do I need to provide proof of this when I apply?
英語能力の要件はありますか？出願の際に証明を提出しますか？

There are no specific requirement but TOEFL iBT 79 or Cambridge First Certificate level is recommended. We do not request you to submit certificate of it.
特定の要件はありませんが、TOEFL79 もしくは Cambridge First Certificate levelの英語レベルがあることを推奨します。証明書の提出は求めていません。

Are there any grade/GPA requirements? GPAの要件はありますか？

2.3 out of 3.0, but it is only recommended level. The application will be accepted with nomination from your home university.
2.3/3.0ですが、あくまで推奨レベルです。在籍大学からの推薦があれば出願は可能です。

How can I choose desired school/college/degree program at the University of Tsukuba?
希望の学群や学類、学位プログラムはどのように選べばいいですか？

Please check the Affiliation and Academic Advisor and Required Information for Online Application in the Application Guide. Please note that some universities have agreements that limit the fields of study that can be exchanged, so please check with your home university in advance. Also, please note that there are some faculties that you cannot select and some programs have Japanese language requirements.

How do I decide my study period, AB module or ABC module?

Please check the Academic Calendar in the Application Guide and read the Important Notes carefully before making your decision.
Please note that the period of study abroad cannot be changed after the application has been submitted.

Are there any restrictions on courses that short-term exchange students can take?
短期留学生が受講できる科目に制限はありますか。

Courses that short-term students can take are basically those that are listed as “Coueses open to exchange students” on Kdb. In addition, courses offered in the following Degree Programs cannot be taken.
-Degree Program in Business Sciences / Law School Program / MBA Program in International Business

短期留学生が受講できる科目は、基本的にKdb上で「短期留学生対象」になっているものになります。また、下記の学位プログラムで開講している科目は受講できません。

I would like to take Japanese courses. What kind of classes are offered?
日本語の科目を履修したいです。どのような科目がありますか？

CEGLOC(Center for Education of Global Communication) offers Japanese language courses for exchange students.
The course you can take depends on your student status at University of Tsukuba and your Japanese proficiency.

Will the courses I listed up on my application be the courses I actually take in the University of Tsukuba?
願書に書いた科目が実際に履修する科目になりますか？

The course information is used as a reference to coordinate your affiliation and academic advisor. You are not necessarily required to take the courses listed on the application. Nor does it guarantee that you can take the courses. Official course registration will be done upon arrival at our university. Detailed information will be provided at the orientation.
科目情報はあくまで所属や指導教員を決定する際に参考とする情報です。必ずしも願書で挙げた科目を取らなければならないわけではありません。また、履修を保証するものでもありません。実際の履修登録は本学に到着後に行います。詳しい情報はオリエンテーションでお知らせします。

Is there a maximum or minimum number of credits to take?　履修登録できる科目数に制限などはありますか？

There is no maximum number of credits to take.
As for the minimum number, there is a requirement for the number of hours (not credits) you attend classes per week.
In order to maintain your visa status as a short-term exchange student, exchange student(Tokubetsu chokogakusei) must attend at least 8 periods of classes (600 minutes) per week.
履修単位数に上限はありません。下限については、単位数ではありませんが、週当たりの最低出席時間数が決まっています。
短期留学生としての在留資格を保つためには、特別聴講学生は週当たり最低8時限(600分)の授業に出席しなくてはなりません。

Can master’s or doctoral students register courses for undergraduate students? Can undergraduate students register courses for master’s or doctoral students?
大学院生が学部生向けの科目を履修したり、学部生が大学院生向けの科目を履修することはできますか？

Graduate students cannot take the undergraduate courses. Undergraduate students cannot take graduate courses.
修士課程や博士課程の学生が学部生対象の科目を履修することはできません。また、学部生が修士課程や博士課程の科目を履修することもできません。

What should I submit if I am in the process of applying for a passport? パスポートを申請中の場合は、何を提出しますか？

Please upload a substitute document that proves you are currently applying for a passport.

When is the date of issue of the certificate of bank balance certificate acceptable?
銀行口座の残高証明書は発行日がいつのものであれば大丈夫ですか？

The certificate must have been issued within 3 months at the time of application for CoE.
Please submit the certificate issued just before submitting to us, and note that we may ask you to submit the certificate again due to scheduling conflicts.
在留資格認定証明書を申請する時点で、３か月以内に発行されたものである必要があります。なるべく出願直前に発行された書類を提出してください。なお、スケジュールの関係で再度提出していただく場合があること、予めご了承ください。

Is it possible to submit a certificate of my parents’ bank account instead of my own?
自分の銀行口座ではなく、親の口座の残高証明書を提出してもよいですか？

You need to submit additional documents if you submit an certificate of bank balance other than your own.
-(Supporter’s) Certificate of Employment
-(Supporter’s) Proof of Income Letter/Salary verification
-Documents proving parents-child relationship
-(Supporter’s) Certificate of Bank Balance
It is strongly recommended that you submit the certificate of your own bank account.

本人以外の口座の場合、提出書類が多くなり煩雑です。

自分の口座の証明書を出すことを推奨します。

Except Japanese Language Proficiency Test(JLPT) result, what else can I submit to prove my Japanese language ability?
日本語能力に関する証明書として、「日本語能力試験(JLPT)」のほかにどのような証明書が提出できますか。

Certificates such as JPT, BJT and J.TEST are also acceptable. JPTやBJT、J.TESTの証明書でも問題ありません。

I wish to choose the College /program which required the Japanese proficiency. What should I do if I have not taken any Japanese language test?
日本語能力の要件がある学類・プログラムに出願したいですが、日本語の試験を受験していない場合はどうすればいいですか。

Please take a test-set of TTBJ (SPOT90 + Grammar90 + Kanji SPOT50) and submit the result.

Scholarship / 奨学金

How do I apply for JASSO and when will I know the results? JASSO奨学金の応募方法と結果の通知時期を知りたいです。

We ask applicants on the application system. Please read the Application Guide (p.3-4) carefully and confirm that you whether you meet all the requirements.
The number of students who are eligible for the JASSO scholarship is very limited. Students who are selected as scholarship recipients will be notified by us.
出願システムで希望の有無を聞いています。JASSO奨学金を希望する場合、Application Guideの3-4ページをよく読んで、受給要件を満たしているかどうか確認してください。
ただし、受給枠は非常に限られております。受給者に採用された場合には、こちらから連絡いたします。

Are there any scholarships that short-term exchange students can apply for?　短期留学生が応募できる奨学金はほかにありますか？

JASSO is the only scholarship available for short-term exchange students.
Only a handful of applicants will be able to get this opportunity. Please plan your living expenses without relying on receiving JASSO scholarship.
本学から案内できる奨学金はJASSOのみとなります。JASSOの受給枠は非常に限られています。JASSO奨学金の受給を前提とせず、留学費用を計画してください。

When will the official acceptance permit be announced? I have not heard from you and I am worried.
正式な受入許可はいつ発表されますか？連絡がなくて不安です。

Please check the “Approximate Timeline for the program” in the Application Guide. If you do not hear from us, please assume that the application process is proceeding well.
出願要項の”Approximate Timeline for the program”をご確認ください。特に連絡がなければ手続きが順調に進んでいると考えてください。

When will the CoE be issued? I am worried if I would not be able to apply for a visa in time.
在留資格認定証明書(CoE)はいつ発行されますか？ビザ申請に間に合うか心配です

As soon as the CoE is issued by Immigration Service Agency of Japan, we will send it along with the Letter of Acceptance. We are unable to provide the expected date of issuance. We will contact you if there is a delay in the issuance of the CoE that affects the timing of your entry into Japan.
出入国在留管理庁から発行され次第、受入許可書とともにお送りします。具体的な発行時期についてはお答えできかねます。CoEの発行が遅れて入国時期に影響がある場合は、こちらから連絡いたします。
